As I walk my granddaughter through my son’s neighborhood to a grocery

store in San Francisco I am struck by how many people have their heads down and eyes averted. A simple “good morning” coupled with a smile and a spirit of friendship is all it takes to get a glance, a nod, perhaps a smile, and maybe a “good morning” reply.

Even in the fog and drizzle, even in the gloom of the weariness of our world, even when it seems that no one cares, even when you know no one, even when it seems that no one speaks your language or looks like you, and you think that you share nothing in common, spread your light and make a human connection.

So today, I encourage you to be intentional, to see others, to make eye contact with them, and then to SMILE! You never know the difference it might make in someone’s life even if for only a moment.
